Vasectomy Q & A

DFW Urology Consultants

What is a vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a permanent method of male birth control. It works by stopping the release of sperm during ejaculation, so both partners may enjoy normal sexual activity with no risk of pregnancy.

How effective is a vasectomy?

The vasectomy procedure is nearly 100 percent effective. The doctors at DFW Urology Consultants have performed thousands of vasectomies over the past 35 years and have yet to see a pregnancy following the completion of the procedure and a confirmation of a zero sperm count.

Is a vasectomy reversible?

Yes. While vasectomies are generally considered a permanent method of birth control, the surgery can be reversed. The reversal procedure only takes a few hours and patients can go home the same day.

What is the procedure like?

DFW Urology Consultants uses a highly effective, modern vasectomy method that is quick and relatively painless. The no incision technique takes 15‒20 minutes after numbing the area with Novocain. Patients typically require one to two days to recover from minor swelling and soreness in the scrotum before returning to normal activities. Patients should not engage in sexual activity or lift objects over 10 pounds for five days following the procedure.

Patients should continue to use an alternative form of birth control until the success of the procedure has been confirmed by a sperm count of zero, typically two months following the vasectomy. Once sterility has been confirmed, no other birth control is needed.

Does having a vasectomy affect sexual performance?

The vasectomy procedure does not have a negative impact on sexual performance or libido. Some men find that having a vasectomy alleviates the anxiety of an unwanted pregnancy for both their partner and themselves, leading to a more care-free experience.

Does a vasectomy leave a scar?

The non-invasive vasectomy procedure offered by DFW Urology Consultants is invisible. There are no scars, bumps or any other visible differences in the scrotum.
